- Developed and directed a child psychiatry training program for fellows from Cedars-Sinai Hospital, a UCLA affiliate (1992-2011)
- Supervised graduate students in counseling, social work, and psychology
- Supervised medical students and general and child psychiatry trainees
- Provided continuing education to clinical staff

Trauma Training
- Developed USC’s Child and Adolescent Psychiatry Trauma Program (2005) with a 5-year SAMHSA grant
- Taught Trauma-Focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy to USC trainees (2006 onward)
- Supervised trainees on the Child and Adolescent Crisis, Emergency, and Consultation Service
Courses and Supervision
- Taught didactic course in psychotherapy
- Supervised monthly Child and Adolescent Psychiatry Journal Club
- Taught a course on statistics focusing on critical thinking
- Presented regular clinical case conferences jointly to pediatric and child psychiatry trainees
Inpatient Unit Teaching
As Ward Chief on the Adolescent Inpatient Unit, Dr. Sugar taught trainees to:
- Assess child trauma
- Differentiate the effects of severe trauma from psychosis
- Interview families
- Use expressive arts in therapy groups with adolescent patients
